15 SILVER BULLETS
Hollister smiled when he wheeled the Firebird into the subterranean garage and found Jennifer's Mercury Cougar parked in his assigned space. He made a mental note to drop off two bottles of Canadian Club at Swanney-Mac's tow tomorrow. After parking in a visitors-only space he climbed out and walked to Jennifer's car. The tires looked almost brand new. He wondered what they had taken them off of. No doubt a recovered stolen. Well, Allstate, State Farm, Triple A, whoever could afford it. Simply another excuse to jack up their rates. With or without they would go up anyway. He headed for the stairs.
Climbing the stairs, he wondered how Jennifer's day had gone. No longer the customer-relations officer for Pacific Coast Oil, she had planned to do a little shopping and enjoy a day off. A day off. Maybe, he thought, he could take Wednesday off. It had been a long time since he'd asked for a special. He had almost a hundred and fifty hours on the books. He decided he'd talk to Purington about it in the morning. He could spend the day with Jennifer. They had to look for an apartment for her. Sleeping in on a weekday morning was a very pleasant thought. Particularly with Jennifer at his side.
Hollister paused when he reached the door to his apartment. He felt strangely awkward. Should I knock? he asked himself. Hell, no. It was his apartment. He tried to remember what he did when he was married. Then there was always a kid or a dog to greet him and he couldn't remember what it was like with just him and his wife. Damn! Was it that long ago? He drew in a breath and knocked lightly before he opened the door.
"Hi." Jennifer smiled from the kitchen. The apartment was bright with light and rich with the smell of dinner. She was wearing an apron over designer jeans and a low-cut, sleeveless blouse. The table in the kitchen was set for two.
A smile covered Hollister's face as he crossed to the bar that divided the living room from the kitchen. "Hi," he answered.
Jennifer moved to him and kissed him on the cheek. "Busy day at the office?" she teased.
Hollister pulled off his jacket and she took it from him. "It was a Monday," he grunted, not really wanting to talk about the day's frustrations or even think of them.
Jennifer laid the jacket carefully on a chair in the living room. Hollister slid onto one of the cushioned barstools.
"Would you care for a drink?" she asked, returning to the kitchen.
"Yeah."
"VO and water, right?" She opened the refrigerator for a pitcher of chilled water.
"Right," Hollister agreed. He was impressed. It was as if this girl had fallen from the pages of Penthouse and was intent on fulfilling every fantasy he'd ever had.
"How was your day?" he asked as she mixed the drink, using crushed ice, exactly as he liked.
"Not bad." Jennifer smiled. "I washed my hair. Did a little shopping after I got my car.
